ElAtletico

The idea

Mexican sports fans read most of their news in English or in clickbait. El Atlético is a clean, multi-sport paper in Spanish, with a daily newsletter, that covers Liga MX, the big European leagues, NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and UFC.

What I built

• A content pipeline in Python that runs on a cron job on a Raspberry Pi. It pulls news from ESPN's public API, filters and de-duplicates stories, picks a balanced set every day across sports and teams, and writes each article with OpenAI models.
• A deterministic verifier that acts as the editor. Clean articles publish themselves; anything suspicious stays hidden with the reason logged, so a bad note never reaches readers.
• The site and newsletter in Next.js, reading only what the verifier approved.

What I learned

The first version ran on n8n. Rebuilding it as plain Python jobs made it cheaper (around a third of a cent per article), easier to test and much easier to reason about when something goes wrong.
